POUGKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Central Connecticut State starter Scott Vitelli tossed eight strong innings Tuesday to lift the Blue Devils over Marist 3-2 at the McCann Baseball Field. CCSU improved to 13-20 with the win, while Marist dropped to 17-16 overall. The loss also snapped Marist's six-game winning streak.

Vitelli (1-3) got the win, allowing just one earned run on six hits while striking out five and walking four. Marist starter Tom Close (3-4) suffered the loss, throwing five innings, while yielding three runs on four hits with one strikeout and two walks. Blue Devil reliever Todd Ruder recorded his first save of the season, hurling a perfect ninth inning.

Right fielder Keith Brachold and designated hitter Kevin Buck recorded two hits apiece to lead the Red Foxes, while CCSU was led by left fielder Scott Boyle's two hits.

Both squads tallied a pair of runs in the second inning. CCSU netted their runs in the top half of the inning on an RBI groundout by third baseman Derek Swilley and Boyle's run-scoring single down the first base line. Marist evened the affair when third baseman Pat Feeney scored first baseman Bryan Towler on an RBI groundout of his own, followed later by center fielder Travis Musolf's bases loaded walk, forcing in Buck.

CCSU shortstop Sean Salvatore scored the game-winning run in the fifth on a wild pitch by Close.

Marist reliever Erik Supplee came on in the sixth and shut down the Blue Devils over the final four innings, allowing just two hits and striking out four.

Buck stole his third base of the season in the eighth inning.

The Red Foxes will head to Norwich, Conn. on Wednesday for a game against Brown at 4 p.m.
