The women's volleyball team dropped a hard-fought three-game match to Big East foe St. John's at the McCann Center this evening. After falling 30-18 in the first game, Marist fought back to keep the match tight in the last two games. Freshman Kelsey Schaefer (Maria Stein, Ohio) led the Marist attack with eight kills in just her second collegiate start.
St. John's was dominant in game one, hitting .321 to take the early lead for the match. The Red Foxes' toughest attack came in game two when they lost 30-24 but kept the Red Storm's hitting percentage at just .185. Marist took an early 4-1 lead in game three, but St. John's came back strong powered by impressive service by Shameka Mitchell. The Red Storm took a 15-5 lead early in that game, the Red Foxes battled back, eventually falling 30-21.
Stefanie Miksch (Austin, Texas) slammed two service aces along with six kills and a block while classmate Sally Hanson (Guerneville, Calif.) totaled four blocks and five kills. Senior Katie Lux (Wantagh, N.Y.) had 11 digs to pace the Red Fox defense.
The Red Foxes return to action this weekend when they head to the west coast for the Cal State Fullerton Tournament.
