The Marist volleyball team earned its first victory of the season today with a 3-1 win over St. Francis (N.Y.) at the Army Open. The Red Foxes lost a 3-0 match to California-Riverside earlier in the day. Junior Kim McEathron (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) registered her first double-double of the season with an impressive 16 kills and 19 digs against St. Francis.
Marist had a solid match against St. Francis, winning games one and two 30-16 and 30-24, respectively. After faltering in game three, the Red Foxes responded loud and clear with a 30-19 win in game four. Freshman setter Lindsey O'Dell (Kingwood, Texas) got the job done all over the court, posting 13 kills, 12 assists and nine digs, good for her first collegiate double-double. Senior Meghan Cochrane (Placentia, Calif.) also tallied a double-double, recording a team-high 22 assists along with 15 digs. Stefanie Miksch (Austin, Texas) was the final Red Fox with double-digit digs, picking up 10 to go along with her six kills and seven service aces. Miksch's seven ace performance was just one shy of the school's single-game record. Senior captain Katie Lux (Wantagh, N.Y.) had her best performance of the season so far with 28 digs.
The Red Foxes dropped a 3-0 decision to Cal-Riverside in their first match of the day. Riverside hit an impressive .309 for the day, led by Jamie DeKiewiet with 11 kills and 10 digs. Lux led the defense with eight digs while Miksch had seven to go along with three kills.
After the weekend's play, Marist improves to 1-7 on the season. Coach Hutton's squad will look to improve its record when it returns home to host the Red Fox Classic, featuring Stonybrook, Dartmouth and Lafayette on Sept. 16-17.
