Poughkeepsie, N.Y. -
Visiting Maine handed the Marist women's soccer team a 3-0 loss in its home-opener this afternoon. Heather Hathorn scored twice for the Black Bears to lead her squad past the Red Foxes.
Maine struck early (7:26) as Maureen McHugh faked past the Marist defense and slotted one to the right side past a diving Caitlin Nazarechuk (Ringwood, N.J.). The Bears would score again in the first half when Hathorn hammered a penalty kick to the top right corner to give her team the 2-0 lead.
The Red Foxes picked up their offensive intensity in latter half of the first, but Maine's defense kept the home team scoreless.
Hathorn struck again at 59:47 in the second half with a close range shot in traffic off a corner kick by Marie Michele Bouchard. Marist fired back with five shots in the second half, including a big effort by freshman midfielder Haley Hart (Scottsdale, Ariz.), but was unable to find the back of the net.
Marist finished with seven shots on the day in a highly physical contest. The rookie Nazarechuk picked up six saves in goal for the Red Foxes, combining with classmate Anna Case (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) to face 12 shots from the Black Bears. Maine's Jasmine Phillips recorded the shutout with one save.
The Red Foxes fell to 1-6 with the loss while Maine improved to 5-3 on the season. Coach Elizabeth Roper's squad will be back in action on Tuesday when it takes on Drexel at 7:00 p.m. on Leonidoff Field.
