Poughkeepsie, N.Y. -
The Marist women's soccer team moved to 1-0 in the MAAC tonight with a 3-1 victory over Manhattan. Freshman Anna Case (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) was solid in goal, making seven saves to lead her team to the win. Three different Red Foxes scored against the Jaspers, with a balanced attack proving the key to success for Coach Roper's squad.
Marist struck first as Justine Caccamo (Bohemia, N.Y.) tallied her sixth goal of the season off touches from Keri Koegel (Merrick, N.Y.) and Jenna McCrory (N. Kingstown, R.I.) at 18:30 in the first half. Less than seven minutes later, Melanie Ondrejik (Manalapan, N.J.) would put the Foxes up 2-0 with a penalty kick, good for the lead at the half.
Both teams were aggressive in the second half, with Manhattan taking six shots and Marist five. After a failed penalty kick by the Jaspers, Caitlin Newkirk would eventually get her team on the board with and unassisted shot over Case from just inside the 18 at 66:30.
Marist then had a botched penalty attempt of its own, but soon after would increase its lead to 3-1. After a rocket by Caccamo was blocked by a Manhattan defender, freshman Haley Hart (Scottsdale, Ariz.) found a streaking Kristina Anderson (N. Rockland, N.Y.) who nailed a shot to the upper right corner. The goal, scored at 78:02, was Anderson's first of the season while Hart's assist was the first of her collegiate career.
The Red Foxes held on for the 3-1 victory to move to 2-6-1 (1-0 MAAC) while the Jaspers fell to 3-5-1 (0-1 MAAC). Manhattan took 12 shots overall to Marist's seven while Case tallied seven saves to Alicia DeFino's three.
The Red Foxes return to action on Sunday when they host MAAC opponent St. Peter's at 1:00 p.m. on Leonidoff Field.
