Feisty Foxes Fall To Lafayette, 40-21

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Lafayette's Jonathan Hurt tallied three touchdown runs and 97 yards on 13 carries to power the Leopards to a 40-21 victory over homestanding Marist in the season opener for both schools. With the win, Lafayette takes a 3-0 lead in the all-time series between the two schools.

Lafayette scored twice in the first quarter, on a 10-yard scoring run by Hurt and a 42-yard field goal by Rick Ziska at the 4:11 mark to jump out to a 10-0 lead.

The Red Foxes answered back on a 12-yard scoring strike from quarterback James Luft to Guy Smith at the 8:10 mark to cut the margin to 10-7.

Less than four minutes later, Hurt broke loose again for a 38-yard run to put the Leopards back up by 10 heading into the half.

To begin the second half, the Red Foxes marched down the field and scored when Luft found wideout Prince Prempeh open for an 11-yard touchdown.

Ziska connected on his second field goal of the game at the 8:53 mark of the third quarter with a 32-yard kick.

The fourth quarter produced a flurry of scoring as the Leopards scored three times on a Hurt 1-yard plunge, a 4-yard touchdown catch by Chad Walker and a 19-yard scoring catch by Duaeno Dorsey from reserve quarterback Pat Davis. Marist's final score came at the 3:48 mark of the fourth quarter by reigning MAAC Offensive Rookie of the Year Obozua Ehikioya on a 1-yard run.

Hurt led the Leopards with 97 yards on 13 carries and three touchdowns. Ehikioya carried the ball 20 times for 67 yards and one score for the Red Foxes.

Brad Maurer led the Lafayette passing attack with a 12-of-17 effort for 111 yards and one touchdown, while Luft powered the Marist passing contingent, going 18-for-27 with 189 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Luft's TD pass to Prempeh gave him 15 career touchdown tosses, making him the school's all-time I-AA record holder.

Prempeh caught five passes for 27 yards and one touchdown to lead Marist, while Lafayette's David Nelson snared three passes for 41 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, Blake Costanzo led Lafayette with 11 tackles, including three for a loss of 22 yards, two sacks for a loss of 20 yards and one fumble recovery. Daniel Diaz posted nine tackles to lead Marist, while Dan Smith had eight tackles and two tackles for loss. Mike Giummo also posted eight stops.

The Red Foxes will be back in action on Saturday, September 10th at Sacred Heart at 1 p.m.
