POGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.- The Marist Men's Soccer team came into Wednesday night's contest against Columbia looking for its first win of the season. Keith Detelj (Sayville, N.Y./Connetquot) got the Red Foxes off to a quick start scoring his first goal of the season at the 7:59 mark. Detelj got behind the Columbia defense and was able to chip a pass from Anthony Graci (Kings Park, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) home for the Red Foxes first tally of the season.
That lead held until the 42nd minute when Columbia's Chris Wales beat Marist goalkeeper Michael Danyo (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) to the left to knot the score at one. Danyo was again solid in net for the Red Foxes, giving up just the one goal. Columbia did not go without opportunities, but Danyo was up to the task with a little help from the goal posts, as Columbia hit three.
The score remained tied into the second half, until Bobby Van Dyke (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) deflected a shot from Steve Fantuzzo (Penfield, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) past Columbia goalkeeper Michael Testa. Fantuzzo drove a ball from outside the 18-yard box that Van Dyke was able to get his foot on and direct into the back corner of the goal. Van Dyke's first goal of the season proved to be the game winner as Marist went on to even its record at 1-1 on the year, with the 2-1 victory.
Marist got support from several of their freshman as Fantuzzo tallied his first collegiate assist on the game winner.
Marist will look to carry the momentum from their first win into their next match at Hofstra. The Marist men will take the field at 7 p.m., immediately following the women's match that begins at 5 p.m.
