The Marist women's basketball team toppled Brown tonight, 67-46 for its ninth consecutive victory. The game featured scoring by 11 different Red Foxes and improved the squad's record to 9-4 overall (4-0 MAAC). This was the third straight game that Marist has held its opponent to less that 27% shooting from the field, as the Bears shot 25.9% overall. Reigning MAAC Player of the Week Fifi Camara (Conakry, Guinea) had her 17th career double-double, with 11 points and 12 rebounds to go along with three assists.
Marist picked up an early 11-3 lead on Brown (5-7/0-0 Ivy), capped with a three from sophomore Courtney Kolesar (Painesville, Ohio) at 11:43. It was the first of three triples for Kolesar, who went 3-4 on the day for nine points. Sarah Hayes hit a jumper to pull Brown within six, but the hot-shooting Foxes went on an 20-7 run, including back-to-back threes from freshman Julianne Viani (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and Kristen Vilardi (Fishkill, N.Y.).
Kolesar hit two more threes in less than 25 seconds, thanks to a Meg Dahlman (Spencerport, N.Y.) steal, giving Marist a 39-16 lead at 3:21. The Red Foxes cruised to a 43-20 lead at halftime on the strength of 61% shooting and 6-8 from three-point range.
Marist started the second half a little sluggish, allowing Brown to go on a 7-2 run early. Sarah Smrdel (Mentor, Ohio) picked the Foxes up with back-to-back jumpers, giving her team a 51-32 lead at 12:58. The Bears scored their last field goal of the game at 9:23 with an Ashley King-Bischof jumper, taking the score to 54-36, Marist.
Brown went 10-10 from the free-throw line in the last nine minutes, but the Red Foxes' bench kept up the pressure. Six different Marist players scored in the last seven minutes of the game and the Red Foxes took the final score, 67-46.
Vilardi and Dahlman each finished the game in double figures, tallying 11 and 10 points, respectively. Vilardi added three assists, two blocks and three rebounds in 32 minutes. Dahlman had a strong defensive outing, posting five rebounds, three blocks and four steals in 32 minutes of work. Kolesar and Smrdel added nine and eight points, respectively. Alisa Kresge (Holmdel, N.J.) posted six assists, six rebounds and four points and had another impressive defensive game for the Red Foxes.
Brown was led by King-Bischof with 15 points and Sarah Hayes with 12.
The Marist women are back in action on Saturday when they host Niagara at 7:00 p.m. at the McCann Center. The Red Foxes will look to maintain a perfect record in MAAC play and stay in first place.
