POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Redshirt sophomore Ryan Stilphen (Bay Village, Ohio) posted a career-high 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Marist men's basketball squad to a 77-68 defeat of Manhattan Wednesday evening at the McCann Center. Marist improved to 9-6 with the win and 3-4 in the MAAC, while the Jaspers suffered their first MAAC loss (6-1) and fell to 10-5 overall. The Red Foxes have won five of their last seven in the McCann Center against the Jaspers.
The Red Foxes led for all but just over five minutes of the contest, taking the lead for good on a 3-pointer by James Smith (Nyack, N.Y.) at the 16:16 mark (10-7). Marist pushed the lead to 13 (35-22) on a layup by Stilphen at the 4:51 mark. The Red Foxes held a 40-34 lead at the break.
Marist held a firm grip on the lead the rest of the way, pushing it back out to 13 (57-44) at the 12:03 mark on a tip-in by junior Miles Orman (Englewood, N.J.). The tightest the lead got was six (74-68) with 48 seconds left on a free throw by Arturo Dubois.
Smith posted 13 points and nine rebounds, while junior Jared Jordan (Hartford, Conn.) had seven points, nine rebounds and 10 assists. Jordan came into the game averaging 7.7 dishes per game, second in the nation. Junior Will Whittington (Kingwood, Tx.) had 10 points.
Dubois led Manhattan with 26 points and 12 boards, while Jason Wingate had 16 points and Jeff Xavier had 12. Dubois and Wingate also had three steals apiece.
The Red Foxes outrebounded the Jaspers 50-30.
Marist finished the game 26-for-55 (47.3 percent), while Manhattan went 23-for-59 from the field (39 percent). The Red Foxes shot 23.1 percent (3-for-13) from the 3-point arc, while the Jaspers hit on 23.5 percent (4-for-17). The Red Foxes lost the free throw battle, hitting on 57.9 percent (22-for-38), while Manhattan went 18-for-29 (62.1) percent.
The Red Foxes are 9-1 this season when leading with five minutes to go, which they also accomplished Wednesday.
The Red Foxes will face Fairfield at 7:00 p.m. Friday in the McCann Center. The game will also be televised as the second half of an ESPNU doubleheader with Marist's women, who play Siena at 4:30 p.m.
