POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's basketball team set a school record for points scored in a first half in its 88-38 win over Fordham on Sunday at the McCann Center. The 50-point margin of victory is the largest in Brian Giorgis' five years as head coach, and the total of 88 points ties the highest output the Red Foxes have tallied under Giorgis. The total of 38 points allowed is the lowest for the Red Foxes since a 63-35 win over Rider on Jan. 16, 2005.
The Red Foxes scored 55 points in the first half as they rolled to a 39-point lead at the intermission.
Twelve different Red Foxes scored in the victory. Freshman forward Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio) led all scorers with a career-high 18 to go along with six rebounds. Fitz shot 8-for-9 from the field, making her 20-for-22 from the field in her three home games this year. Red-shirt junior center Meg Dahlman (Spencerport, N.Y.) scored 11 and hauled in a game-high eight rebounds, and senior guard Shannon Minter (Ossining, N.Y.) tied her career high by scoring 11 off the bench. Minter hit three three-pointers.
In all, six Red Foxes either tied or set their season or career highs in scoring - Fitz, Minter, red-shirt sophomore guard Julianne Viani (season-high eight), junior guard Alexis Waters (tied career high with six), freshman forward Lynzee Johnson (career-high five) and senior forward Mary Alice Duff (career-high four). The Red Foxes received 51 points off their bench in the game.
Senior point guard Alisa Kresge (Holmdel, N.J.) finished with three points, seven assists and three steals in just 14 minutes of action. The seven assists gave Kresge 434 for her career, moving her to within three of second place on the school's all-time list, a position currently held by Beth Shackel. Kresge, who enjoyed the 47th multi-steal game of her career, moved into sole possession of eighth on the school's all-time steals list.
The Red Foxes shot a season-high 56.3 percent for the game, including 63.9 percent in the first half. Marist also set a season high by hitting 11 three-pointers in the game, as eight different Red Foxes connected from long range. Marist had 23 assists on 36 made baskets, and committed just nine turnovers in the contest. It was the third consecutive game the Red Foxes had fewer than 10 turnovers. Fordham shot just 23.2 percent from the field and committed 16 turnovers.
Marist opened the game on a 19-1 run, with Dahlman scoring nine and junior forward Sarah Smrdel (Mentor, Ohio) accounting for seven in that span. The Rams never got within 12 points after that, and the Red Foxes led by as many as 52 in the second half.
Minter played a team-high 20 minutes, as all 13 of the Red Foxes saw at least 13 minutes of action.
The previous school record for points scored in a first half was 53, accomplished by the Red Foxes in a 104-47 victory over Columbia on Jan. 5, 2002. That contest was the last time Marist won a game by at least 50. The only other time Marist scored as many points in a game under Giorgis came in an 88-78 win over Rider on Jan. 16, 2003.
Beth Troutt led the Rams in scoring with 11 points, including three three-pointers. Due to injuries, Fordham dressed just six players in the contest.
Marist will return to action on Tuesday, when the Red Foxes face Brown in Providence, R.I. The game will be the second of four the Red Foxes will have against Ivy League teams this season. In last year's meeting between the teams, Marist earned a 67-46 victory at the McCann Center.
