Marist Extends Winning Streak To Three

Nov. 28, 2006

Final Stats

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Marist women's basketball team won its third consecutive game on Tuesday, as the Red Foxes earned a 71-53 victory over Brown. Senior point guard Nina Vecchio.

Kresge added three points, three steals and two rebounds in the game. It was the 48th multi-steal game of Kresge's career.

Freshman forward Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio) paced three scorers in double digits with 16 off the bench. Fitz shot 6-for-11 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line, adding two rebounds and an assist. She has led Marist in scoring the last three games.

Red-shirt junior center Meg Dahlman (Spencerport, N.Y.) finished with 12 and a game-high nine rebounds. Dahlman has been the game's high rebounder in Marist's last three contests, and she has scored in double figures in all six of the Red Foxes' games this season.

Red-shirt sophomore guard Julianne Viani (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) scored a season-high 11 points, hitting three three-pointers. Viani added four assists and three rebounds. Junior guard Nikki Flores (Montvale, N.J.) scored eight points, all coming in the second half. Flores also hit a three-pointer, extending her streak of consecutive games with a three to six.

Brown led 6-3 in the early going, but Viani's second three of the contest tied the score at six with 16:53 left in the first half. Fitz then came off the bench to score six straight Marist points, and her third consecutive basket gave Marist the lead for good at 12-10 with 14:21 remaining until halftime. After Brown's Shae Fitzpatrick's basket at the 7:01 mark cut Marist's lead back to two, the Red Foxes answered with a 7-0 run. Marist took a 37-30 lead to the locker room.

With 17:47 remaining, a layup from Brown's Ashley King-Bischof cut the Marist lead to four at 40-36. However, the Bears would get no closer. From the 13:55 mark until the 10:45 mark, the Red Foxes went on a 12-2 run to extend the lead into double digits for good. Flores and Courtney Kolesar (Concord, Ohio) accounted for all of the points in the run, as each junior guard scored six in the span of 3:10.

King-Bischof led Brown with 19 points. Brown's two starting post players, King-Bischof and Catherine Schaper, combined to score 30 points. However, 20 of them came in the first half. The Red Foxes held Brown to just 23 second-half points.

The Red Foxes' largest lead in the game was 19. For the game, Marist shot exactly 50 percent from the field, hitting 27 out of 54 shots. The Red Foxes hit eight of their 21 three-point attempts, and nine of their 11 free-throw attempts. Marist won the rebounding edge by a margin of 33-24, and had 16 turnovers to Brown's 18.

Marist will attempt to win its fourth consecutive game on Saturday, when the Red Foxes take on Bucknell of the Patriot League at 3:30 p.m. in Lewisburg, Pa. The meeting will be the first between the teams since the 2001-02 season.
