Marist Drops Heartbreaker At Georgetown, 24-21

Nov. 4, 2006

Final Stats

WASHINGTON, D.C.-Georgetown defensive back Derek Franks made a leaping interception deep in his own territory to seal a 24-21 victory over the Marist football squad Saturday at Multi-Sport Field. The Red Foxes dropped to 3-7 overall, while the Hoyas improved to 2-7.

The Red Foxes got on the board first with a three-yard run by reigning MAAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week Adam Hansen (Monroe Township, N.J.) with 3:55 to go in the first quarter. The run finished off a 10 play, 54 yard drive for Marist that took five minutes, nine seconds.

Freshman O'Neil Anderson (Dorchester, Mass.) then took over offensively for Marist, powering the Red Foxes down the field with 11 carries. The 5-7 back completed the drive with a seven-yard scoring run with 6:44 to go in the half. The drive consisted of 14 plays and 84 yards over six minutes and 49 seconds.

The Hoyas took advantage of a big kickoff return by Kenny Mitchell on the ensuing possession and punched in a score of their own with 4:38 to go in the half by running back Charlie Houghton. The return happened after the Red Foxes were called for offside on the kickoff, negating a touchback by senior kicker Chris Collins (Pougkheepsie, N.Y.). Houghton scored on a 14-yard pass across the middle from quarterback Matt Bassuener and completed a three play, 19 yard drive that took just one minute, 46 seconds.

The Hoyas got on the board first in the second half with a 26-yard field goal by Eric Bjonerud to make the score 14-10 Marist. The boot completed an 11 play, 63 yard drive that spanned five minutes and 27 seconds.

Marist junior quarterback Stephen McGrath (Manasquan, N.J.) rammed in the next score for the Red Foxes when he took a high snap from center and dove across the goal line for the one-yard score. The score was McGrath's first rushing touchdown of the season. The drive went nine plays, 73 yards and took three minutes, 51 seconds.

Georgetown trimmed its deficit to 21-16 with 10:51 to go in the third quarter when Bassuener found tight end Matt Cooper for a 17-yard touchdown in the left corner of the end zone with 10:54 to go. Bassuener's conversion pass over the middle after the score was knocked away by junior linebacker Dan Smith (Reston, Va.).

The Hoyas registered the go-ahead score with 1:57 to play on a screen pass over the middle from Bassuener to running back Erik Carter for a nine-yard touchdown. Georgetown went up by three on the conversion pass over the middle to wideout Sydney Baker. The massive drive went 17 plays for 64 yards in seven minutes, 42 seconds.

Marist had one more chance to tie the game in the last two minutes, but McGrath's pass sailed over the head of senior wideout Daniel Dulac (Newington, Conn.) and into the arms of Franks.

McGrath finished with 19 completions in 26 attempts for 232 yards and three interceptions, while Bassuener went 19 for 25 for 132 yards and three scores for the Hoyas. Anderson was the Red Foxes' leading rusher with 84 yards on 18 carries and the touchdown, while the Hoyas were led by Houghton's 14 carries for 71 yards. Dulac and junior wide receiver Tim Keegan (Middlebury, Conn.) led Marist with five catches apiece, while Georgetown slot receiver Brent Craft paced the Hoyas with four catches.

The Red Foxes will host Iona next Saturday at 1 p.m. on Senior Day for a share of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title.
