Final Stats
Canisius Coach Terry Zeh
On the play of Marist and Canisius:
If you look at the way Marist went in the league last year and the way we went, it was a lot different. We're not playing the best. I think we played a little bit better tonight, but still not good enough.
On the play of Fifi Camara:
Fifi is a better player this year than last year if that's even possible.
On problems for his team tonight:
We fouled Marist too much. One of the big statistics if you look at all of them, we had 20 turnovers, they had three. That's 17 more opportunities that they're getting.
On Marist's post play/Meg Dahlman:
Dahlman is more comfortable down low and she can get in double digits every night and that takes some pressure off of Fifi.
Senior guard Becky Zak
On her team's play tonight:
I think the past two times we played Marist, they didn't really see Canisius. Hopefully next time we'll bring our best game and they'll see the real us. We need to buckle down and get the stops we didn't get today.
What did not go well today:
You just take one possession at a time and you need to get stops, defensive stops. It seemed we had to work so much harder to get our baskets than they did.
Marist Coach Giorgis
Opening Statement:
It felt like it was one of the best basketball games I've ever been involved in because I think we beat Canisius at their best. They're a tremendous shooting team. That's a sign of a real special basketball team is when you can answer, shot after shot. I was proud of the kids in terms that they didn't panic, they got balls to the scorers.
On Marist's bench play:
We are a little deeper on the bench, usually we run out of gas at this time. But I think we are better off the bench this year than last year.
On Marist needing to win just one of its next four games to clinch the regular season title:
I don't think this is the type of team that wants to rest on that. These kids have come from so many winning teams in high school, that they don't like to lose. I haven't seen them take games off. And if they were and I didn't notice it, their teammates would tell them. These guys want to win the regular season outright and don't want to share it. First and foremost we want to go to the tournament again and we need to win the MAAC to do that.
On taking care of the ball tonight:
Three turnovers in a game? I don't know what the record is in the NCAA, but we must be pretty close.
Redshirt-sophomore center Meg Dahlman
On what makes this team special:
We have so many weapons and I think that's what makes our team so special. Anyone can step up. Different people come in off the bench and contribute every night. Last time when we went to Canisius, I didn't play so well but Sarah stepped it up. And again tonight she did it, so did Nikki (Flores).
Sophomore forward Sarah Smrdel
On the win and her play off the bench:
It feels pretty good to beat one of the better teams in the MAAC and it's special to get this one tonight. It's a good feeling knowing that I can help out the team when they focus on Dahlman and Fifi. Hopefully we'll put up more wins.
Senior forward Fifi Camara
On beating Canisius twice this year:
It feels good to beat them at this point and they are a really good team. If we saw them again in the MAAC Tournament I think it would be different than last year, we would come to win.
Senior guard Kristen Vilardi
The difference this season:
I think we have more experience this year. We have a couple of new additions to the team with Dahlman playing well and our bench really stepping it up.
