The Marist women closed out the regular season with a convincing 72-40 victory at Rider this afternoon. With the win, the Foxes improved to 21-6 overall, 16-2 in the MAAC while Rider dropped to 3-24/2-16 MAAC. Marist has matched its record for regular season wins with 21 and broken the school record for MAAC wins with 16. Sophomore Meg Dahlman (Spencerport, N.Y.) was just shy of a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds in the win.
Marist kicked off the game on a 16-5 run that included six points from Dahlman. Sarah Smrdel (Mentor, Ohio) came in off the bench to score five quick points, boosting the Foxes' lead to 23-8 at 10:46. Rider managed to force Marist into some tough shots and cut the lead to eight after a Janele Henderson jumper, down 25-17 at 5:48. Freshman Julianne Viani (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) took matters into her own hands, hitting back-to-back threes to give Marist a 33-21 lead at the break.
The Red Foxes did not score their first bucket of the second half until 17:57, but that started a 15-5 run to take the 48-26 lead at 13:27. The game progressed quickly, with Marist consistently outscoring Rider. In the last quarter of the game, the Red Foxes held the Broncs without a field goal from 8:38 to 1:42, while scoring 13 points themselves. Marist held its largest lead of the game (33 points) at 1:42, up 68-35 and held out to win 72-40 in the end.
All 13 Red Foxes saw action in the contest, with nine scoring and 11 recording a rebound. Dahlman added two blocks and two steals to her effort while Fifi Camara (Conakry, Guinea) posted 15 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Viani rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points to go with three rebounds and two assists. Smrdel was just shy of the mark with nine points.
Danielle Constantino led Rider with 12 points while Kara Borel posted nine rebounds.
The Red Foxes will next be in action on Saturday March 4 at 12:00 p.m.when they play in the MAAC Tournament Semifinals as the number one seed.
