LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J.--The Marist baseball squad split a doubleheader Saturday at Rider University, losing game one 9-7 and winning the second game 5-3. Marist moved to 5-12 overall (1-1 MAAC), while Rider advanced to 4-15 overall (1-1 MAAC).
In the first game, Rider sophomore Will O'Connor pitched eight innings for the win, allowing five earned runs while striking out three.
Marist was led by left fielder Adam Pernasilici's two hits and two RBI, while first baseman Brian Gibbs scored a pair of runs. Reliever Bobby Hastry took the loss, yielding two earned runs in one inning.
Rider's Sean Olson hit a two-run double in the seventh inning to give Rider a 5-4 lead, Rider's first lead of the game.
Rider took a 9-4 lead in the eighth inning when senior Tom Letizia doubled and scored on a double by freshman Maurice Williams.
Sophomore Jeff Reynolds also hit an RBI single in the eighth.
Olson and Letizia each had two hits, as did senior Mike Poalise and senior Gene Crimoli.
Freshman Jamie Hayes came in from right field to pitch the ninth, earning the save.
In the second game, Rider took a 2-1 lead in the third inning on three hits and an error, but Marist scored two runs in the fifth inning on two hits, a walk and a hit batsman to take a 4-2 lead.
Marist was led by junior Pat Feeney's 3-for-3 effort, with a pair of runs scored. Reliever Robert Ryan earned his fifth save of the season, striking out two batters over the game's final one and two-thirds innings.
The Broncs' Bryan Wagner, Williams and Olson each had two hits in the second game.
The series finale will be Sunday at noon.
