Final Stats
BROOKLINE, Mass.-The Marist baseball squad used a stout pitching effort and timely hitting to register a 5-2 victory over Northeastern Tuesday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
The scoring began when NU's Trevor Smith struck out Adam Pernasilici (Tecumseh, Ontario) on a pitch in the dirt. Junior Dan Milano's throw to first sailed over the head of sophomore Josh Porter to allow Pernasilici to reach base.
After a walk, catcher Bryan Towler (Hampton, N.H.) reached on an error by Brian Nutting. Kevin Grauer (Plain City, Ohio) followed with a two-run single up the middle to give the Red Foxes (6-13) a 2-0 lead. After another walk, John Mazzello (Hyde Park, N.Y.) brought Towler home with an RBI single to make it 3-0 Marist.
All the runs in the fourth were unearned. Smith finished with four innings pitched, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out four.
The Huskies (9-8) got on the scoreboard when Nutting homered to left off of Jacob Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.). They added another run in the eighth when senior Matt Morizio singled home senior Arman Sidhu, cutting the Red Foxes lead to 5-2.
NU loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth and the go-ahead run at the plate, but freshman James Donaldson grounded out to third against Marist closer Robert Ryan (Roslindale, Mass.) to end the inning.
Starter Tom Close (1-1, Devon, Pa.) picked up the win with three innings pitched where he allowed just three hits and struck out three. Smith (3-1) was the tough-luck loser after allowing three unearned runs in the fourth inning.
Marist will host MAAC foe Canisius at noon on Saturday in doubleheader action.
