POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Marist juniors Pat Feeney (New City, N.Y.) and Justin Lepore (Madison, Conn.) drove in 10 runs each, while redshirt senior hurlers Jonathan Smith (Woonsocket, R.I.) and George Heath (Henrietta, N.Y.) gave sterling performances on the mound in the Red Foxes' doubleheader sweep over Saint Peter's Sunday at the McCann Baseball Field. The Red Foxes won the first game 11-2 and the second by a score of 19-1. The Peacocks dropped to 8-22 overall and 3-8 in league play with the setbacks, while Marist improved to 12-19 overall and 6-5 in MAAC action.
Lepore, the designated hitter, led Marist at the plate in the first game with three hits and three RBIs. Freshman center fielder Max Most (Port Washington, N.Y.), junior right fielder Travis Musolf (Manchester, N.J.) and Feeney posted two hits apiece, while senior catcher Bryan Towler, freshman second baseman Kyle Meyer (East Greenbush, N.Y.) and senior shortstop Andy Kiriakedes (Great Barrington, Mass.) all scored two runs. Saint Peter's was led by two hits each from second baseman Dennis Alexander and right fielder Wayne Guarino.
Smith (2-4) picked up the victory, allowing just two earned runs and eights hits with five strikeouts and no walks in eight innings. SPC starter Chris Innis (1-4) was tagged with his fourth loss of the season after yielding two earned runs on seven hits to go with four strikeouts and four walks in four innings pitched.
Towler led off the fifth inning with his second home run of the year when he smashed a 3-1 offering from Innis over the left-center field wall.
It was all Marist in the second affair as freshman reserve catcher Andrew Stanton (Delmar, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with four RBIs, going 2-for-2 at the plate. The big hit for Stanton came in the sixth inning when he crushed a 1-2 pitch from Saint Peter's Nik Edmondson over the left field wall for his second round tripper of the season, a three-run blast. Sophomore catcher Keith Glasser (Rensselaer, N.Y.) led off the second frame with the first home run of his career, yet another shot over the left field wall.
Feeney also plated three runs in the second game with a 3-for-4 performance, while scoring three himself. Most also had three runs scored, while Musolf had top honors, touching home four times. Saint Peter's catcher Mike McGuire knocked in the Peacocks' only run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, scoring center fielder Frank Pacifico.
Heath (3-3) went the distance, allowing just four hits and one run to go with five strikeouts. The Red Foxes did not walk a batter in either game. Saint Peter's starter Grevin Rodriguez suffered his fourth loss (1-4) of the season, yielding five earned runs on five hits to go with one strikeout and two walks in just one inning of work.
The two teams will meet again Monday at 3 p.m. in the final game of the series.
