WEST POINT, N.Y. - In a battle of Hudson Valley rivals, the Marist men's soccer team topped Army 2-1 on Monday night. Steve Fantuzzo (Penfield, N.Y.) and Jamison Allegra (East Haven, Conn.) scored for the Red Foxes, while Daniel Owens (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) made 10 saves in net.
Fantuzzo gave Marist an early 1-0 lead as he found the back of the net at the 8:32 mark of the match. The sophomore midfielder blasted a ball from 25 yards to beat Army keeper John-Micha Gallogly.
The Black Knights would knot the score at 1-1 at the 33:31 mark, as Owens was beat by Chase Hunter, who forced a turnover in the box and put it away.
Marist would take the lead for good on a second early strike. Allegra buried the game winner just over three minutes into the second half on a feed from Fantuzzo. The goal is his first career marker for the Red Foxes.
The Red Foxes were outshot in the match 31-14, the Black Knights also held the advantage in corner kicks at 11-4 on the night.
With the win Marist opens the season 1-0 and will be off until Saturday when it will travel to New Haven, Conn. For a matchup with Yale. Kick-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
