Final Stats
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-The Wagner football team used 28 second half points to wallop Marist 38-7 Saturday evening at Leonidoff Field. The Seahawks improved to 3-0, while the Red Foxes fell to 1-2.
After an early Piotr Czech field goal to put Wagner up 3-0, the Red Foxes answered back at the 7:17 mark of the second half on an eight-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Stephen McGrath (Manasquan, N.J.) to sophomore running back Keith Mitchell (Syracuse, N.Y.). Wagner closed the first half with a two-yard scoring pass from quarterback Matt Abbey to Joe Kinard to take a 10-7 lead into the half.
Wagner running back Jason Butler powered the Seahawk rushing attack in the second half, scoring on runs of 11 and seven yards, while Aliga Betts rumbled over from 22 yards out for the second score. Warren Barnett posted the final tally on a two-yard run with 1:16 left to play for the final margin.
Betts led the Wagner rushing attack with 22 rushes for 92 yards, while Butler had 15 carries for 80 yards. Abbey finished 15-for-26 for 187 yards with a touchdown toss. Kinard and Andre Guilbault had four catches apiece to pace the Wagner receiving attack.
The Red Foxes were led on the ground by senior running back Frankie Farrington (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) and McGrath, who had 29 and 19 yards, respectively. McGrath finished 13-for-24 through the air for 154 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Senior wideout Kevin Frederick (Meriden, Conn.) led Marist's receiving corps with five grabs for 76 yards.
Defensively, Wagner was led by eight tackles from Jeremy Spinks, while senior linebacker D.J. Ford (Mahopac, N.Y.) and junior linebacker Dan Smith (Reston, Va.) posted 10 stops apiece. Ford also had two tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
The Red Foxes will be in action again next Saturday for a home showdown with Holy Cross out of the Patriot League. Kickoff is, once again, 7 p.m.
