NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Marist Men's Soccer Squad opened its MAAC schedule with a 1-1 tie at Iona on Friday afternoon. Senior captain Keith Detelj (Sayville, N.Y.) tallied his first goal of the season in the first half.
Detelj got Marist on the board at the 19:35 mark with a little help from an Iona defender. He chipped the ball towards the goal and it was deflected in by one of the Gales defenders to give Marist an early 1-0 lead.
The lead would hold up until just before the half, when Iona's Maciek Sliwinski tied the score on his sixth marker of the season. He was able to head the ball past Marist keeper Daniel Owens (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) to close out the scoring. Assists on the goal were credited to Ben Williams and Bryan Oelkers.
The teams would play a scoreless second half and two scoreless overtime periods en route to the tie. Owens would make six saves in the match, while Nils Binstock of Iona would make two stops.
Iona held a huge 25-6 advantage in shots, including a 7-2 edge in shots on goal, in the game, but could only convert on the one goal. Iona also held a large advantage in corner kicks at 10-1. Fouls in the match were 21-15 against Iona.
With the tie Marist moves to 3-4-1 overall and 0-0-1 in league play. Marist will return to the pitch on Sunday, when it travels to Fairfield for a rematch of last seasons MAAC Title game, in which Marist prevailed. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Fairfield.
