Iona-Marist Quotes

Jan. 21, 2007

Recap |  Final Stats

Marist Head Coach Brian Giorgis:

Opening statement:

"I thought it was a great team effort today at both ends of the floor. We beat a very, very quality basketball team."

On his team's offensive execution in the second half:

"We didn't want to just keep coming down and firing because as long as we have the ball, they can't score, and that's your best defense."

Senior point guard Alisa Kresge:

On if she was surprised by the 21-point margin:

"We worked really hard to get this win. ... We need to step up to the challenge the next time and maybe the time after that."

Junior guard Nikki Flores:

On her role offensively:

"When shots were available, I was just trying to shoot them. I wasn't trying to force anything because, turnovers -- don't want those. But if the shot was there, I was going to take them, and they were there."

Freshman forward Lynzee Johnson:

On scoring eight quick points off the bench:

"It was nice. Coach told me to go in there and be assertive, so the first shot I got, I took it and it went in. I just got lucky."

Iona Head Coach Anthony Bozzella:

Opening statement:

"I thought Marist did a very good job as usual defensively. We struggled to get some good looks. I was extremely disappointed in our defense. I thought we actually did not execute our defensive game plan at all."

On what Marist does well defensively:

"They talk very well. They slide their feet very well. They're extremely well coached and they close out as well as any team in the league."

On Marist freshmen Lynzee Johnson:

"You can tell they like to play. They play with some good energy."

Iona senior forward Martina Weber:

On if the physical nature of the game bothered her:

"I like to play physical. Losing a game is what bothers me most. I think they were extremely well-prepared against us. They knew exactly our weaknesses and our strengths and they just attacked that. One strength, for example, is me, and they got me totally out of my game. I'm just mad at myself and mad at my team. We had a game plan and we didn't stick to it like my coach said, and that's what's so disappointing."

On her level of anticipation going into the game:

"I felt that excitement in the locker room ... but then on the court, we just lost our heads. I don't know why; maybe we're not used to playing in front of such a big crowd and it was loud and noisy or whatever, but they are just excuses. We just have to stick together and get our heads together and just play our game. What our coaches ask us to do, we have to stick to that."
