Red Foxes Come Back From 2-0 Hole For MAAC Win

Oct. 12, 2007

Final Stats

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.- On Friday, the Marist women's soccer team used a huge second half effort to come back from a 2-0 deficit, and freshman Merrilynn Esteve (Morristown, N.J.) was able to put in the game winner for a 3-2 MAAC victory over Iona. The win moves Marist's record to 5-3-2 overall and 2-0 in the MAAC.

Iona got off to a good start when Ali Werner scored in the eleventh minute of the match. The Gaels extended their lead to 2-0 when Carol Danis scored less then five minutes later.

Marist came out strong in the second half and stormed back. They got on the board when senior Keri Koegel (Merrick, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the year. Koegel blasted a shot into the right corner from about 25 yards out. The goal was unassisted and came just seven minutes into the second half.

"That changed the momentum and we never gave it back," Marist Head Coach Elizabeth Roper said when asked about the goal.

In the 73rd minute of the match, the Red Foxes used another unassisted score to even the match at 2-2. Katie Zasly (Foster City, Calif.) put in the second goal for Marist. It was her fourth goal of the year and her third in as many matches.

The final goal of the match came when Esteve took a pass from Koegel and was able to put it in past Iona keeper Suzanne Baldisard. It was Esteve's fourth goal of the year.

Coach Roper was both happy and relieved after the match. "We came out terribly flat in the first half but did a great job re-grouping for the second. We stayed focused and under control and we got a nice come back win."

She added, "Keri (Koegel) deserves a ton of credit for this one. She kept us in the game during the first half and made a huge play to get us on the board in the second. She really led us today."

Allison Lane (Marlton, N.J.) took over the goalkeeping duties in the second half for the Red Foxes. She was able to hold Iona scoreless and earned the win. She is now 2-2-2 on the year.

The Red Foxes out-shot Iona 11-8 on the afternoon and 7-4 in the second half..

Marist will return to action Sunday when they visit the Fairfield Stags. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
