Marist Women Knock Off Fairfield In OT

Oct. 15, 2007

Final Stats

FAIRFIELD, CONN.- On Sunday night the Marist women's soccer team went to Fairfield and beat the MAAC preseason favorites 2-1 in overtime. Marist sophomore Teresa Ferraro (Floral Park, N.Y.) scored both goals for the Red Foxes.

Even with the awkward 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening start; the Marist women came out strong and applied pressure throughout the entire 99 minute affair.

In the ninth minute of the match, the Red Foxes (6-3-2, 3-0 MAAC) were able to jump ahead after a Keri Koegel (Merrick N.Y.) corner. The senior lofted a hooking kick from the left to the goal line where Ferraro headed the ball up and over Fairfield keeper Brett Maron into the opposite side of the goal.

"We knew they would be a tough team and we wanted to come out strong and confident. We did that and it really set the tone for the match," Marist Head Coach Elizabeth Roper said.

The rest of the first half was back and forth. It saw the Marist defense and goal keeper Allison Lane (Marlton, N.J.) withstand thirteen shots from the Stags.

Twenty minutes into the second half, Fairfield was able to pull even on a goal off the foot of Alex Caram. She was able to sneak it in under the top cross bar from about fifteen yards out. This evened the score at 1-1 and seemed to give the Stags some much needed momentum.

Even with the momentum swing the Marist defense held strong and turned away numerous Fairfield attacks.

"All night our defense played fantastic. They really stayed together under intense pressure from those girls," Roper said after the match.

When regulation ended the score was still tied at one, forcing overtime. With about five minutes left in the overtime Marist junior Ashley Chase (Lumberton, N.J.) took a shot from 25 yards out that ticked off the cross bar. The shot looked to be going in but ended up being just a bit high.

Finally, with 28 seconds left in the first overtime period, Ferraro was able to get the game winner. After a direct kick was lofted in front of the net, there was a scrum for the ball. Marist took three shots that were blocked before Ferraro could corral the ball and bury it in the back right corner.

The two goals for Ferraro were her first scores of the year. Marist out-shot the Stags 4-1 in the extra period, and seven different Red Foxes took shots on the night.

Allison Lane got the win in goal. She improves her record to 3-2-1 on the year. The freshman made eight saves on the night.

"Allison also did a great job in goal tonight. Some of those saves she made were really great. Big, big, saves," added Roper after the match.

The win moves Marist into first place in the MAAC at 3-0. They will return to the field on Friday, at home, versus St. Peter's (7p.m.).
