Red Foxes Drop Heartbreaker To Manhattan

Oct. 21, 2007

Final Stats

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - On Sunday afternoon, the Marist women's soccer team dropped a tough decision to a relentless Manhattan squad by a score of 3-2. Marist controlled the ball and the match for the entire first half but faltered down the stretch, and Manhattan was able to come back from a 2-0 hole for the win.

Marist took a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute on a goal from Kate Fox (Franklin, Mass.). Senior Keri Koegel (Merrick, N.Y.) led Fox perfectly down the middle, and Fox was able to score on a break away.

Marist extended the lead twelve minutes into the second half when Fox got her fifth goal of the year. This time, Maria Baez (Levittown, N.Y.) led Fox down the left sideline for a break away goal.

After the second goal, the entire match changed. The Jaspers turned up the heat on the Marist defense and the Red Foxes could not find an answer. Courtney Hughes scored goals twelve minutes apart for Manhattan as they tied the score at two with about eighteen minutes remaining.

The Red Foxes were able to hold off the Manhattan attack through the rest of regulation, but in the first overtime period, Caroline Morse broke away from the Marist defense for the game winner with 2:19 remaining in the first overtime period.

The win drops Marist to 7-4-2 (4-1 MAAC). The win also drops the Red Foxes into second place in the conference.

"We lost some focus and energy after our second goal, and that Manhattan team really turned up the heat on us," Marist Head Coach Elizabeth Roper said.

Freshman Allison Lane (Marlton, N.J.) took the loss in net for the Red Foxes. Her record falls to 4-3-1. Marist out-shot Manhattan 13-11 on the afternoon. They also held a 5-4 edge in corners.

"The enthusiasm and ability is there," Roper added. "It's just a matter of execution and consistency. It's not whether you get beat; it's how you bounce back. And I know we will bounce back."

The Red Foxes will return to action when they visit Rider on Friday afternoon.
