Red Foxes Cruise Past Rider

Final Stats

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J.-Going into Friday's match at Rider, the Marist women's soccer team had to prove they would be able to bounce back from a tough home loss on the road. They were able to prove that and more by crushing Rider, 4-0, in the rain.

From the start, it was clear that the Red Foxes were ready to play. They got on the board in the twelfth minute of the match when sophomore forward Kate Fox (Franklin, Mass.) continued her torrid scoring streak. Fox took a service off the foot of Ashley Chase (Lumberton, N.J.) and headed it in for her seventh goal of the year. It was her fifth goal in the last three matches.

Eight minutes later, the Red Foxes would take a 2-0 lead on another header. This time it was Katie Zasly (Foster City, Calif.) scoring her sixth goal of the year off another beautiful service into the box from Chase.

"Ashley made two gorgeous services for us. They were gutsy plays that really gave us a spark," Head Coach Elizabeth Roper said after the win.

Marist (8-4-2, 5-1 MAAC) went into the break with a 2-0 lead just like Sunday versus Manhattan. This time, the Red Foxes with-stood early second half pressure from Rider and forced the action throughout the entire contest.

Alexandra Lauterborn (Farmingdale, N.Y.) gave the Red Foxes a 3-0 lead when she controlled a loose ball in front and found the back of the net. It was the second goal of the year for the sophomore.

The final score came after Keri Koegel (Merrick, N.Y.) played in a direct kick, Maria Baez controlled and crossed the ball to Merrilynn Esteve (Morristown, N.J.) for the score. It was Esteve's sixth goal of the year.

Marist controlled every part of the match. They held a 17-7 shot advantage and took eight corners to Rider's two.

Allison Lane (Marlton, N.J.) got the win in net for Marist. The freshman made three saves.

"We stayed focused and intense the whole match. Keri (Koegel) did a great job controlling the middle of the field and keeping the ball in," Roper said. "We kept the ball moving all afternoon in terrible conditions and really kept up the pressure. It was a nice bounce back win."

The Red Foxes will continue their two game trip versus Loyola (Md.) on Sunday.

Roper was happy with the win but realized a big test remains in Loyola. "It was a nice win for us, but we have to move on and get ready to play a really good Loyola team on Sunday. It's a big match for both teams, so it should be a good one."
