Final Stats
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.- In the first varisty athletic event ever played at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field, the Marist men's soccer team played to a hard fought 1-1 draw versus the Broncs of Rider. The Red Foxes fell behind late in the first half and had to fight through a packed-in Rider defense to tally their score in the 88th minute of the match.
Rider scored first when A.J. Parillo knocked in a loose ball after a corner. He scored with four minutes left in the first half.
For the rest of the match, Rider packed in their defense and Marist had to battle in order to get scoring chances. After controlling the ball for more than two-thirds of the match, the Red Foxes finally broke through with one-minute and forty seconds remaining.
Freshman Joe Touloumis (Cranford, N.J.) crossed from the left corner to a streaking Corey Perkins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), who was able to head the ball past the out-stretched arms of Rider keeper Jesse Forsythe. It was Perkins fourth goal of the year.
Freshman keeper Tom DeBenedetto (Paramus, N.J.) made four saves in goal for Marist.
It was the first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match for both squads. Marist moved their record to 3-4-2 (0-0-1 MAAC). Rider is now 5-4-1 (0-0-1 MAAC).
The Red Foxes out-shot the Broncs 17-12. They also took three more corners (8-5).
Midfielders Jason Nacca (Rochester, N.Y.) and Chris Nacca (Rochester, N.Y.) played a strong match for Marist. They controlled the middle of the field throughout.
The Red Foxes will return to action at home Sunday afternoon at 1 P.M versus Loyola. They will be looking for their first conference win of the year.
