Final Stats
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - In the final non-conference match of the season, the Marist women's soccer team went toe-to-toe with the 5th ranked team in the Northeast, Columbia. The Red Foxes held the lead for much of the second half but the match ended with the two teams knotted at 2-2.
Marist got on the board early when Katie Zasly (Foster City, Calif.) was able to put in a pass off the foot of Maria Baez (Levittown, N.Y.). The goal came in the second minute of the match. It was Zasly's third score of the year.
The Lions drew even in the 30th minute when Lindsey Knowles knocked in her third goal of the year.
Marist came out strong in the second half, controlling the middle of the field. They were able to pull ahead on the third goal of the year off the foot of Merrilynn Esteve (Morristown, N.J.) in the 53rd minute. Keri Koegel (Merrick, N.Y.) assisted on the score.
The Red Foxes (4-3-2) defense remained strong, fighting off numerous Columbia (6-3-3) attacks.
Marist Head Coach Elizabeth Roper was thrilled with the way her defense played. "All four of my backs were outstanding. They all played the entire 110 minutes and never let down."
With about 6 minutes left in the match, Columbia's Allison Leonard was able to find the back of the net off a loose ball. Eight bodies were fighting for the ball in front and Leonard was able to come out with it and score.
Both teams were visibly exhausted during the two overtime periods. Columbia had the only real threat but missed wide.
Coach Roper added, "We played a ranked team so well. It was a tremendous team effort and an all around excellent game. It was a nice atmosphere. Hopefully this gives us some confidence and momentum heading into the MAAC season."
Marist out-shot Columbia 14-8 on the night. They also held a 7-6 edge on corners.
The Red Foxes will return to action at Iona, Friday at 3 PM. They return home versus St. Peter's next Friday at 7 PM.
