STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Marist women's basketball team rode a 19-0 run in the first half to take a 36-16 lead on their way to a 65-54 win at Stony Brook Friday night. Sophomore Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio) led the Red Foxes with 17 points and pulled down six rebounds.
The two teams would trade baskets early, with Marist establishing their dominance in the paint with easy baskets as four different players scored the Red Foxes' first 11 points to take an 11-5 lead. After a Stony Brook basket cut the lead to four with 10:37 to go in the first half, Marist would go on a 19-0 run over the next 4:52 to go ahead 30-7. Senior Sarah Smrdel (Mentor, Ohio) drained a pair of three-pointers as Lynzee Johnson (Bellbrook, Ohio) added a three-pointer of her own and a layup over the run for her five points of the night.
Marist (2-1) would end the first half up 36-16, shooting 51.9% from the field and holding the Seawolves to 20.6% on seven of 34 shooting. In the second half, the Red Foxes would jump out to their largest lead of the game, as Elise Caron (Quebec, Canada) would set up a Smrdel jumper to put Marist ahead 44-18 with 15:06 to play. Caron would finish the game with a game-high seven assists. The lead would stay over twenty for much of the half, but Stony Brook would close the game with a nine to three run to get to the final score of 65-54.
Meg Dahlman (Spencerport, N.Y.) scored in double-figures for the second straight game, putting in 13 points and grabbing a team-high eight rebounds. Senior Nikki Flores (Montvale, N.J.) scored 10 points, going 10-10 from the free-throw line and adding four rebounds and two assists. Smrdel finished the game with eight points and four rebounds. Marist shot 42.9% from the field in the game, and made 15 of 16 free-throws.
Stony Brook (2-2) was led by Kairsten Nunn with 12 points, with Crystal Rushin adding eight points and eight rebounds. Dana Ferraro, a preseason first-team America East selection, scored seven points and had a game-high 10 rebounds.
Marist continues their road trip on Sunday with a 2 p.m. game at Dartmouth.
