Marist Men Fall To St. Peter's

Nov. 2, 2007

Final Stats

JERSEY CITY, N.J.-On Friday afternoon, the Marist men's soccer team dropped a tough, 1-0 decision to St. Peter's. Even though the Red Foxes lost, they still hold on to the sixth spot in the conference standings because of a Niagara loss.

The Marist men were out-shot 19-12 but had several strong scoring chances throughout the match. They hit a post early and just missed on several other occasions. Of the twelve shots Marist took, eight were on goal. Brothers, Jason Nacca (Rochester, N.Y.) and Christ Nacca put two shots on goal.

The difference in the match was experience and the St. Peter's team had it.

"We played a good match. The only difference was expierience and their's found a way to get the elusive goal. Their best player made a play and that's why he is a Herman Award candidate," Marist Head Coach Matt Viggiano said after the match.

Juana Gavaria got the lone goal of the match in the 70th minute.

The Red Foxes were led by Mike McGowan (Oxford, Conn.) in the midfield. The rookie controlled the ball and helped create several quality scoring chances.

Even with the loss, Marist controls their own destiny. They can earn a bye into the quarterfinals of the MAAC Tournament with a win on Sunday versus Manhattan.

"We lost a road match to a good team. We played well and just couldn't find a way to get the ball to the back of the net. We have to go out Sunday and take care of business," said Viggiano.
