NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. - The Marist volleyball team was defeated 3-1 (30-28, 30-26, 27-30, 30-20) at Niagara Saturday afternoon. Sophomore outside hitter Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Tex.) led Marist with 20 kills. She has had 20 or more kills in a match seven times this season.
The Red Foxes (10-17, 6-9 MAAC) got 11 kills from freshman Allie Burke (Alpharetta, Ga.) and 10 kills from Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Tex.) on the afternoon. Sophomore setter Dawn Jan (Belleville, N.J.) filled the box score with 47 assists, nine digs, and a team-high five blocks. Junior Kelsey Schaefer (Maria Stein, Ohio) and freshman Raeanna Gutkowski (Long Valley, N.J.) led the back row defense, with 12 and 11 digs respectively.
After taking game one 30-28, the Purple Eagles hit .257 in game two and held Marist to a .119 to win 30-26. The Red Foxes would come back with great defense in game three, which would offset a .081 hitting percentage to take the game 30-27. Niagara would then take the momentum to clinch the match, hitting .300 in game four to win 30-20 and take the match 3-1.
Nicole Piette led Niagara (7-17, 5-10 MAAC) with 21 kills. Raelean Rush added 16 kills, with Maurin Lawrence chipping in 14 kills and a .344 hitting percentage. Setter Mallory Boron had 47 assists on the afternoon, and Sara Mancini led all players with 19 digs. The Purple Eagles held Marist to a .110 hitting percentage and held a 71-60 advantage in digs.
Marist continues their weekend roadtrip on Sunday with a 2 p.m. match at Canisius.
