POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-On Sunday afternoon, the Marist women's soccer team cruised by Canisius 3-0. The win gives the Red Foxes the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season title, and the number one seed going into the MAAC Tournament next weekend. Marist is hosting the tournament.
The Marist women dominated the match for the entire 90 minutes. They out-shot Canisius 18-6 and did not allow the Golden Griffins a shot until the 67th minute of the match.
In the seventh minute, the Red Foxes (10-4-3, 7-1-1 MAAC) went ahead for good when freshman Merrilynn Esteve (Morristown, N.J.) scored her eighth goal of the year off a pass from Kate Fox (Franklin, Mass.).
The score moved to 2-0 when Teresa Ferraro (Floral Park, N.Y.) was able to head in a gorgeous corner kick off the foot of Maria Baez (Levittown, N.Y.) in the fifteenth minute. Ferraro scored again three minutes later for the final score of the match. Alexandra Lauterborn (Farmingdale, N.Y.) assisted on the third goal. The two scores were the third and fourth of the year for Ferraro.
"We wanted to go out and set the tone early," Marist Head Coach Elizabeth Roper said. "Once we got ahead, we got everyone in on the attack and really played well."
Allison Lane got the shutout in net for Marist. She is now 7-3-3 on the year. The rookie made three saves on the day.
Once again, the Marist defense played nearly flawless soccer. Baez, Lauren Tillotson (Islip, N.Y.), Ashley Chase (Lumberton, N.J.), and senior captain Melanie Ondrejik thwarted any chance Canisius came close to having.
The Marist mid-field also did a nice job keeping the ball in the Canisius zone all match.
The Red Foxes will be the number one seed in next weekends MAAC Tournament and will face Niagara in the semifinals on Friday night (7 p.m.). In the other semifinal, Loyola (Md.) will take on Fairfield.
Roper and the rest of the Red Foxes are excited for the opportunity to play in the tournament hosted by Marist.
"We reached our goal of making the tournament and now we have to raise the bar. The regular season title is a great accomplishment but we still have two more wins to get."
