RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Red-shirt junior center Meg Dahlman (Spencerport, N.Y.) scored a season-high 20 points to lift the Marist women's basketball team to its 10th consecutive victory, as the Red Foxes defeated Manhattan 71-51 on Sunday. The Red Foxes improved to 19-4 overall and 12-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. They now have a double-digit winning streak for the third time in the last three seasons, which are the only three times in program history the team has accomplished the feat.
Dahlman shot 7-for-9 from the field, 1-for-1 from three-point range and 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. She has now hit a three-pointer in six consecutive games, and today's game marked the seventh time in her career that she scored 20 points in a game. The Red Foxes are 7-0 in those contests.
Freshman forward Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio) added 15 points, a game-high seven rebounds and two steals. Fitz shot 6-for-11 from the field and was 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. Senior point guard Lynne Griffin, who amassed 240 between 1981 and 1985. Freshman forward Lynzee Johnson (Xenia, Ohio) added nine points and five rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench. Johnson, who shot 4-for-4 from the field and hit a three-pointer, tied her career high in scoring and set career highs in rebounds and minutes played.
With 17:56 left in the first half, Manhattan's Caitlin Flood hit a free throw to put the Lady Jaspers up 4-2. The Red Foxes then went on a 34-4 run over a span of 11:18. Marist also held Manhattan scoreless over a stretch in 8:05 during this time. The Red Foxes led by as much as 28 in the first half, and took a 42-17 halftime lead.
For the game, Marist shot 48.0 percent (24-for-50) from the field, 35.3 percent (6-for-17) from three-point range and 94.4 percent (17-for-18) from the free-throw line. The Red Foxes shot 53.8 percent from the field and hit five threes in the first half. Manhattan shot just 36.7 percent (18-for-49) from the field.
Marist has now won the last eight meetings against the Lady Jaspers, including their last three at Draddy Gymnasium. In those three games at Manhattan, the Red Foxes have hit 23 three-pointers.
Gabrielle Cottrell led Manhattan with 13 points. Flood added 11, and Vanessa Davison finished with 10. The Lady Jaspers, who entered the game having won three of their last five, now stand at 7-16 overall and 4-8 in the MAAC.
The Red Foxes will return to action on Friday, when they host Canisius at 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast locally on Time Warner Cable 6.
