ARLINGTON, VA - The Marist and George Washington baseball teams split a doubleheader Sunday. Marist is now 2-11 overall, while George Washington improved to 6-12.

In the opening game, GW fell behind early before rallying for the win. Marist took a 4-0 lead into the fourth inning and a 7-2 advantage into the bottom of the fifth. The Colonials' comeback began with a two-run home run by junior Charlie Kruer in the fourth. GW added another run in the fifth when senior Mickey Shupin singled to right center to drive in Andrew Abokhair.

In the sixth inning, Chris Marsicano laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Whitey Wallace from third base. Junior Gavin Swanson followed with a single to left field to plate Abokhair. GW added another run in the seventh when Shupin doubled and then came around to score on a single by freshman Tom Zebroski.

Trailing 8-6, the Colonials took their first lead of the game when they scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth, all with two outs. Shupin, Zebroski, Michael Parker and Kruer had consecutive RBI-hits to pace the scoring.

The GW lead was short-lived, however, as Marist reclaimed control of the game, plating three runs in the top of the ninth, capped by Ryan Gauck's two-RBI double.

After Abokhair grounded out to lead off the bottom of the ninth for the Colonials, trailing now 11-10, pinch-hitter Curtis Eward singled into center field. Junior Gavin Swanson was up next and drew a walk. Both him and Bryan Hwang, who entered the game as a pinch runner for Eward, advanced a base on a Marist passed ball. With runners now at second and third, freshman pinch-hitter Will Cooper smashed a double into right field to score both runs and win the game for the Colonials.

Sophomore Pat Lehman pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to earn the win (1-2). Marist's Sandy Sussman (0-3), who gave up the tying and winning runs, was tagged with the loss. Shupin led the Colonials offensively, finishing with three hits, two runs scored and two RBI.

Marist Ryan Gauck's also had a pair of RBI. Travis Musolf also scored a pair of runs.

In Game Two, originally scheduled as a seven-inning contest, Marist defeated GW by a final score of 5-4 in eight innings. Matthew Lesyk's RBI single in the top of the eighth proved to be the game-winner.

Senior Derek Haese pitched all eight innings in the loss (1-4). Haese allowed five runs, three earned, while striking out eight batters. Tom Close (1-1) pitched the final four innings to earn the win for Marist.

Tim Reeves was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Whitey Wallace added two hits for the Colonials.

Max Most lead Marist with three hits in the second game, while Matthew Lesyk's had a pair of RBIs each.

The two teams were originally scheduled to play a three-game series beginning on Friday, but winter weather and poor field conditions forced a postponement of Friday's game and a cancellation of Saturday's game. GW is now 3-2 all-time against Marist.
