Final Stats
CONWAY, S.C.-West Virginia left fielder Justin Jenkins raced home on a Marist error in the bottom of the ninth to give the Mountaineers a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over the Red Foxes Friday evening at Watson Stadium in Conway, S.C. West Virginia improved to 4-2 overall, while the Red Foxes dropped to 0-4.
Senior third baseman Pat Feeney (New City, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while senior designated hitter Justin Lepore (Madison, Conn.) and sophomore second baseman Kyle Meyer (East Greenbush, N.Y.) also registered a pair of hits. Senior center fielder Travis Musolf (Manchester, N.J.) led the way on the basepaths with two runs scored.
Marist senior reliever Robert Ryan (Roslindale, Mass.) suffered his second loss (0-2) of the season, giving up two earned runs and three hits in the last frame. The outing spoiled a sterling effort by Marist senior starter Erik Supplee (Williamsburg, Va.), who gave up just two runs and struck out four over the game's first seven innings to stake the Red Foxes to a 5-2 lead entering the eighth.
The Mountaineers were powered by a three hits apiece by center fielder Adam White, first baseman Jordon Yost and designated hitter Brent Lockhart. One of Yost's hits was an eighth-inning home run off Marist freshman reliever Stephen Peterson (Danvers , Mass.) to pull WVU within two at 5-3.
WVU's Billy Gross (2-0) picked up the win in relief, striking out five Marist batters over the contest's final two and two-thirds innings.
In the ninth, the Moutaineers kick-started a two-out rally with back-to-back singles by White and shortstop Tyler Kuhn before Jenkins tied the affair with a triple to left center before his game-ending heroics.
The Red Foxes will be back in action Saturday at noon against host Coastal Carolina at noon.
