Final Stats
JERSEY CITY, NJ (March 24, 2007) - The Saint Peter's College Peacocks (11-10, 2-0 MAAC) swept their first MAAC doubleheader of the season this afternoon defeating the Marist College Red Foxes (2-13, 0-2 MAAC) 4-3 in 14 innings and 4-3. The Peacocks staged late inning comebacks in both contests. Jim O'Brien was the game one hero, knocking in the winning run in the 14th. Kevin Kallert had the honors in game two, hitting a bases clearing double in the bottom of the seventh.
In game one, the Peacocks needed 14 innings to upend the Red Foxes 4-3. Marist got on the board with a run in the third and a run in the seventh to take a 2-0 lead. Saint Peter's found their offense in their half of the seventh as Dave Lewandoski hit an RBI double to score Kallert and Andrew Case knocked in Lewandoski with a single to tie the game at 2-2. The Peacocks then took the lead in the eighth on an RBI double by Mike McGuire. Marist was down to their final out in the ninth, but scratched across a run, sending the game into extra time. In the bottom of the 14th, Joe Romano led off with a triple down the right field line. He scored on a single by O'Brien to give the Peacocks a victory in their MAAC opener.
Frank Flynn earned the win with a scoreless 14th. Erik Miksitz started the game and pitched 8 2/3 innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits, while striking out seven Red Foxes. Chris Innis allowed the tying run in the ninth, but pitched four scoreless innings after that.
Marist got on the board first in game two, scoring single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh. The Peacocks finally found their offense in the bottom of the seventh. Saint Peter's loaded the bases with one out on two walked and a hit batter. Mike McGuire then reached on an error, plating the Peacocks first run. Kallert then took the count to 3-1 before lacing a double into the right centerfield gap that cleared the bases and send the Peacocks home with a doubleheader sweep.
Today's was the Peacocks first wins over Marist since the 2000 season, when they swept a doubleheader from the Red Foxes. This is the second straight season that Saint Peter's has won their first MAAC doubleheader of the season.
Flynn picked up the win in game two by pitching two innings in relief. Kallert was 2-3 with three RBI in the nightcap.
These two teams will finish their three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 12pm at Cochrane Stadium in Jersey City, NJ.
