Final Stats
BRONX, N.Y.-Fordham's Chris Kaible singled home Brian Keeney in the bottom of the eighth inning, while Ryan Sheflott pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, as the Fordham Rams took a 6-5 victory over the Marist Red Foxes in baseball action at Houlihan Park on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, Fordham has won three in a row, putting their overall record at 10-8, while Marist falls to 2-15.
The Red Foxes were powered by a pair of RBIs from left fielder Max Most, while center fielder Travis Musolf scored a pair of runs. Tom Close (1-2) suffered the hard luck loss in relief, after allowing no eared runs and just three hits over the final four innings with three strikeouts.
Despite winning just two games this season, Marist struck first, as Musolf led off the game with a single, stole second , moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a ground out.
Fordham came right back with a run in the bottom of the first, as Danny Leach, who had singled and stole second, scored on a Marist error.
The Rams then grabbed a 2-1 in the second, as P.J. Como tripled to right center with two outs, and scored on a double by Eric Reese.
Marist then knotted the game at two in the third, as Musolf reached on an error, moved to third on a single, and scored on a fielder's choice.
Fordham retook the lead with three runs in the fourth inning. John Kahn got things started with a single and moved to second on a passed ball. After a ground out moved Kahn to third, Chris Kaible was then hit by a pitch, putting runners at first and third. Como then beat out an infield single, allowing Kaible to go to second with Kahn scoring. Reese then singled up the middle to score Kaible with Como going to second. After a wild pitch moved the runners up, Como scored on a ground out by Leach.
Marist then tied the game at five in the fifth, scoring three runs on just one hit and a Fordham error.
With the score tied at five in the bottom of the eighth, Brian Keeney reached on an error by the Marist shortstop, advancing to second as the ball went out of play. Kaible then followed with a single to center, allowing Keeney to score from second for the go-ahead run for Fordham.
Fordham closer James Sammut made that lead hold up in the ninth, as he got three ground outs for his first save of the season and the 14th of his career, tying him with Jay Hutchison for second on the Rams' all-time list.
Fordham's Ryan Sheflott (1-1) picked up his first win of the season, as he threw 3 1/3 innings of hitless relief, as he came in for Fordham starter Andrew Davis, who went the first 4 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs to go with three strikeouts.
At the plate, P.J. Como was 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored, while Eric Reese with 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI. John Kahn also had two hits for Fordham.
The Fordham Baseball team will next be in action on Wednesday, March 28th, as they will host Stony Brook at 3:30 PM at Houlihan Park. This is a change from the original schedule, as Stony Brook's field is not playable.
