March 4, 2007

Final Stats

CONWAY, S.C.- The Coastal Carolina baseball team picked up its 11th win in an offensive battle against Marist, 16-7. Joey Haug picked up his first win this season for the Chanticleers.

The Chanticleers started off the scoring against the Red Foxes of Marist in the first inning. Sophomore David Sappelt reached on a Marist error before senior Dom Duggan had his seventh double of the season to move Sappelt to third. Senior Chris Raber, in almost the exact same scenario as the first inning of Friday's win against Rhode Island, singled to left center field to pick up two RBI's. David Anderson then singled to left center before Tommy Baldridge grounded into a fielder's choice which scored Raber. Marist ace Tom Close then got the remaining outs to put the Red Foxes at the plate.

Marist got its first run in the second inning after Coastal starter Bobby Gagg gave up two straight singles before recording his first strike out of the day. Gagg then gave up another single to load the bases bringing up lead off hitter Travis Musolf, who singled into left field to score a run. Gagg then picked up two quick outs to get himself out of the inning.

In the third inning, Duggan picked up another single and advanced off of Raber's second hit of the day before scoring off of a Marist error, putting the score at 4-1. Musolf then recorded the third out after catching a line drive to center by Baldridge. Gagg then retired the side, striking out the last two batters in the inning.

Derek Martin started off the fourth inning with a single down the left field line before Doc Doyle hit a bullet down the left side to pick up his second double of the season, moving Martin to third. Red Fox Coach Dennis Healy went in to his bullpen to put right-hander Jacob Wiley on the mound with no outs and two runners on base. Wiley walked the first two batters he faced, Tyler Bortnick and Adam Vrable, which scored a run for the Chanticleers. Marist finally picked up its first out of the inning off a fielder's choice hit from Sappelt which forced Martin out at the plate before Wiley struck out Duggan which brought up Raber with two outs. Raber then took advantage of a perfect pitch down the middle and the wind blowing directly out at centerfield to jack a grand-slam homerun over the left field fence to put the Chanticleers ahead 9-1.

Marist then had a six-run fifth inning, scoring four of those runs with two outs. Gagg walked the lead-off batter and gave up a single to Musolf before Gagg struck out Matthew Lesyk for the first out. Pat Feeney then had a single to left field to score the Red Foxes second run of the game and Justin Lepore had a sacrifice fly which scored Musolf. Gagg then gave up his second walk of the inning, loading the bases for Marist before Ryan Gauk hit a three-run triple to put the score at 9-6. Coach Gary Gilmore then looked to his bullpen to bring in Joey Haug with two outs in the middle of the fifth. The Chanticleer defense then had a throwing error which allowed Keith Glasser on base before a single from Kyle Meyer moved him to third before lead-off batter Musolf hit a fly ball to the shortstop to get the Chants out of the inning.

At the bottom of the fifth, Martin ripped a triple to center field off of new Marist pitcher Mike Puckli and then scored off of a wild pitch to put the score at 10-7. Puckli then walked Doyle before striking out Bortnick, however, Doyle got a good jump off of the pitch and stole second base. Vrable then got his first hit of the day, with a single down the middle to score Doyle. Sappelt then had a single down the left side which scored Vrable before stealing secord on a 2-2 count to Duggan before he grounded into the third out.

Coastal scored again in the sixth inning when Peter Barone came in to pitch for Marist. Barone walked the first batter of the inning, Raber, who then scored off of a Baldridge single to left field. Martin also picked up another single in the inning before Barone retired the last two batters.

The two teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the eighth inning when Coastal scored three runs off of two hits. Marist brought in its fifth pitcher of the day with Richard Cary taking over for Barone who gave up three hits. Dustin Koca reached first after getting hit by a pitch and then advanced on a passed ball. Cary then walked the next two batters to load up the bases before the Red Foxes turned a double play, which scored Koca. Cary then walked Bortnick before Vrable singled up the middle scoring Baldridge, who walked earlier in the inning. Sappelt then singled up the middle, which scored Bortnick before Josh Rickards came in to pitch for Marist. Rickards then struck out Duggan for the last out.

Travis Risser came in to close the game out for the Chanticleers and picked up three quick outs, including one strike out. The Chants were led by Sappelt who was 3-for-6 with two RBI's and a double and Raber who was 3-for-4 with a grand slam. Martin also ended the day going 3-for-4 with a triple and Vrable went 2-for-4 with three RBI's.

The Red Foxes were led by Musolf who went 3-for-5 and Tom Close picked up the loss for Marist after pitching three innings and giving up six runs on six hits (four earned) and striking out one.

The Chanticleers will be back in action tomorrow, (Sunday) as they take on the West Virginia Mountaineers in the last game of the Microtel Inn and Suites Challenge at 1:30 p.m.
