Marist Takes Series From Canisius With Wild Victory Sunday

April 1, 2007

Box Score

BUFFALO, N.Y.-Max Most drove in Keith Glasser with a two-out single in the top of the 10th inning, and Eric Alessio got the Canisius hitters in order in the bottom of the frame to give the Red Foxes a 12-11 victory in a MAAC series finale Sunday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

Most finished the day 4-for-7, and Brian McDonough went 3-for-5 with four RBIs for Marist (5-16, 2-4 MAAC). Kevin Mahoney (right) was 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs to lead Canisius (5-22, 1-5 MAAC), while Connor Burke and Ian Choy each had three hits.

The Golden Griffins battled back from an early 8-3 deficit, and a three-run seventh gave Canisius a 10-9 lead. Trailing 9-7, Canisius tied the contest on back-to-back, one-run singles by Burke and Choy. Freshman Perry Silverman's RBI single gave Canisius its first lead of the game, but Marist tied the score in the top of the eighth, scoring a run with the help of two Canisius errors.

The Red Foxes took an 11-10 cushion in the ninth when Richard Curylo scored after Kenny Anderson reached on a throwing error that would have been the third out. Mahoney led off the bottom of the frame with a double and scored later on a Burke single to tie the game 11-11.

Burke was on second with one out and Silverman at the plate when the Griffs' aggressiveness led to a tough-luck double play. Silverman's line drive to center field with Burke running allowed Travis Musolf to get the third out by doubling up Burke at second before he could get back to the bag. That play sent the contest into extra innings.

Marist used a grand slam homer from McDonough in the second to cap a five-run frame and take a 5-3 lead. A solo home run from Pat Feeney, and an RBI single by Glasser gave the Red Foxes an 8-3 cushion in the fifth.

Canisius came back with four runs in the home half of the inning. The Griffs got the first three hitters on base, and Alec Cabello scored on a Kevin Reimer groundout. With two outs, Mahoney's fly ball to left field left the yard, making the margin 8-7. A Matt Lesyk RBI single made the score 9-7 in the top of the seventh.
