POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team was swept in a home doubleheader against Albany on Tuesday. The Red Foxes suffered a 10-6 loss in game one, and a 12-6 defeat in game two as they fell to 7-19 overall on the season.
Both games were scheduled for seven innings, although the second was shortened to five innings due to darkness. Catcher Andrew Stanton (Delmar, N.Y.) had a pair of hits and a pair of runs scored in game one, and freshman right fielder Kyle LaHonta (Walnut Creek, Calif.) drove in two runs.
The Red Foxes led 2-0 after two innings and 5-4 after three, but Albany scored twice in the fourth, three times in the fifth and once in the sixth to pull away. Mike Konstanty led the Great Danes (12-15) by going 4-for-4 with a double and a home run.
In the second game, Albany jumped out to the early lead by scoring four times in the top of the first. The Red Foxes battled back and took the lead by scoring five times in their have of the fourth. A three-run double by senior designated hitter Justin Lepore (Madison, Conn.) tied the game at five apiece in the fourth, and freshman first baseman Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.) followed with an RBI double to give Marist a 6-5 lead. However, the Great Danes responded by scoring seven times in their half of the fifth. Every Albany starter had at least one hit in the second game.
Albany right-hander Matthew Herrick picked up the victory in relief in both games of the doubleheader, and now stands at 2-0 on the season.
Marist returns to action on Thursday, when the Red Foxes host New York Tech at McCann Baseball Field.
