Marist Falls Hard At Stony Brook

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Redshirt freshman Jordan Purington threw a complete game to earn his first collegiate victory and the Seawolves tallied 14 hits and 14 runs off of seven different Marist pitchers as the Stony Brook baseball team topped Marist, 14-2, on Thursday afternoon at University Field. With the win the Seawolves improve to 18-17 overall and Marist falls to 11-22.

 

Senior third baseman Pat Feeney (New City, N.Y.) had two hits to lead the way for the Red Foxes. Starter Bobby Hastry (0-1, Maynard, Mass.) took the loss, tossing two-thirds of an inning, allowing eight hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts and two walks.

 

The Seawolves sent 13 batters to the plate as they tallied six hits to plate eight runs in the bottom half of the first inning as they grabbed control and rushed out to an 8-0 lead. Jeremy Nowak, Kyle Traylor, Keith Fier, Brian Witkowski and Chris Sipp all had RBI in the inning. Witkowski scored two runs as the Seawolves gave Purington an eight run cushion.

 

Purington allowed a run in the second and a run in the third before coming into his own. The right hander did not allow a single run in the final six innings and the Seawolves added three runs in the third and three in the fourth as they held on for the 14-2 win.

 

Purington (1-0) scattered nine hits in the complete game victory in only his second appearance in his collegiate career. He struck out three batters and only walked two in the win.

 

Witkowski led the red hot Stony Brook bats, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and four runs scored. Sipp was 3-for-4 with three driven in and a run scored and Nowak was 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored.

 

The Seawolves return to action on Saturday when they host Columbia for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
