Marist Pulls Out 9-8 Extra-Inning Thriller Over Fairfield

May 13, 2007

Final Stats

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Marist freshman shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.) raced home with the game-winning run to give the Marist baseball team a 9-8 10th-inning win over visiting Fairfield Sunday at the McCann Baseball Field. The win improved Marist to 18-28 overall and 12-11 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, while the Stags dipped to 15-28 overall and 9-14 in the league. The run came by virtue of a passed ball committed by Fairfield catcher Mike Weiner on an offering from Mike Fournier, his second of the day.

Marist is now tied with Saint Peter's for third in the league's standings. The Peacocks swept the Red Foxes in Jersey City earlier this season. Rider is currently fifth at 11-12 in league play, but Marist holds the tiebreaker with the Broncs after taking two out of three meetings earlier this season in Poughkeepsie. The top four teams in the MAAC will qualify for the MAAC Tournament at Dutchess Stadium later this month.

Marist senior reliever Robert Ryan (3-1, Roslindale, Mass.) picked up the win, tossing the game's final two innings with three strikeouts and one walk. Fairfield's Dan Urbanovich took the loss (0-1) after yielding just two hits and no earned runs with two strikeouts in three and a third innings.

Marist was led at the plate by senior second baseman Pat Feeney (New City, N.Y.) and sophomore left fielder Max Most (Port Washington, N.Y.) who each registered three hits. Feeney had a team-high four RBIs, while Most scored three runs.

Fairfield center fielder Jason Rago led the way for the Stags with four hits and two RBIs, while third baseman Patrick Hoban had three base knocks. Weiner and shortstop Albie DeSimone both scored two runs.

Marist will face Siena (11-31 overall, 9-11 MAAC) in a doubleheader on Thursday at noon. The final game of the series will also be Friday at noon.
