POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Marist sophomore left fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.) blasted his second home run of the season Friday on his way to three RBIs as the Red Foxes defeated Siena 10-5 at Siena Field. By virtue of its victory, Marist clinched a spot in next week's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, N.Y. The Red Foxes will play at 7 p.m. Thursday evening against an opponent to be determined.
Marist (20-30/14-12 MAAC) scored in its first three at bats to build a 5-1 lead after three innings of play. Just one of the runs was earned, as Siena committed three of its costly five errors in the first third of the game.
Jason DeFilippo's two-run home run in the fifth cut the lead to 5-3, as Siena (12-33/10-13 MAAC) rallied behind the pitching of reliever Dan Miklas, who did not allow a run in two innings of work. Gary DerHagopian had gotten the Saints on the board with a home run in the second.
McDonough homered in Marist's next at bat, to stretch the lead to 6-3 and the Red Foxes added four unearned runs in the seventh to make it 10-3.
Drew Sgro's pinch-hit two-run single in the eighth accounted for the final 10-5 tally.
Marist freshman starter Stephen Peterson (3-3, Danvers, Mass.) picked up the win, allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and no walks. Senior reliever Bobby Hastry (Maynard, Mass.) notched his second save, hurling the last four innings and yielding two runs on five hits with six strikeouts and one walk.
Junior Chris Klepps led the Saints with three hits and a run scored. Jake Willis and DeFilippo each had two hits. Siena out-hit Marist 12-11.
Senior right fielder Adam Pernasilici (Tecumseh, Ontario) led Marist with three hits. McDonough, junior catcher Keith Glasser (Rensselaer, N.Y.) and senior designated hitter Justin Lepore (Madison, Conn.) each had two. Senior third baseman Pat Feeney (New City, N.Y.) also scored a pair of runs.
