POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Center fielder Craig Binick unleashed a two-run triple off Marist junior reliever Tom Close (Devon, Pa.) in the top of the 10th inning to lift the Bears of the New York Institute of Technology over Marist by a score 3-1. NYIT improved to 17-19 overall with the victory, while Marist dropped to 13-27.
NYIT reliever Louie Bernardi (1-0) picked up the win, allowing one hit in the ninth inning with a strikeout. Mike Roth then came in and got the last two outs of the contest to nail down his third save of the season.
Marist redshirt senior reliever Mike Puckli (0-4, Leesburg, Va.) suffered the loss, surrendering one hit and two runs over three innings with two walks. Richard Cary (Binghamton, N.Y.), the Red Foxes' freshman starter, started the game strong, yielding just four hits, two walks and one run with five strikeouts in 6.1 innings. However, he was matched with an equally stellar outing from Bear starter John Eichhorn, who also allowed just three hits and one run in six frames with four punchouts.
NYIT designated hitter Christian Dienna led the Bears with two hits on the afternoon, while Binick stole his 19th base of the season.
Marist freshman first baseman Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.) also registered a pair of hits, while sophomore center fielder Max Most (Port Washington, N.Y.) hammered his first home run of the season down the right field line in the fourth inning.
The Red Foxes will be back in action Saturday at noon in doubleheader action against Niagara (13-24 overall, 2-13 MAAC) at the McCann Baseball Field.
