WEST POINT, N.Y. - Merrilynn Esteve (Morristown, N.J.) scored a goal and had an assist in her first collegiate game, and junior Caitlin Nazarechuk (Ringwood, N.J.) made four saves to record the shutout in goal as Marist posted a 2-0 victory over Army in the season opener for both teams on Friday.
Sophomore Kate Fox (Franklin, Mass.) scored the first goal of the game 10:59 in with an assist for Esteve, who followed with her first collegiate goal at the 27:40 mark with an assist from senior Keri Koegel (Merrick, N.Y.). Marist outshot Army 12-4 in the second half, and then kept Army off the scoreboard in the second half despite being outshot by a 13-2 margin after halftime.
Esteve led the Red Foxes with eight shots on goal, and Fox added three.
It was the second victory in 12 tries against Army in the all-time series, and the first time in four tries that the Red Foxes downed Army in a season opener.
Marist will return to action next Friday with a 7 p.m. game at Lehigh.
