RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Marist volleyball team won its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener on Saturday, posting a 3-1 victory over Manhattan at Draddy Gymnasium. The Red Foxes prevailed by scores of 30-28, 30-21, 13-30, 30-24, as sophomore outside hitter Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) led the way with 27 kills and a hitting percentage of .350. Schultze's kills total was just one off Marist's single-match record.
Freshman middle blocker Allie Burke (Alpharetta, Ga.) added 15 kills and five blocks, and had a team-best hitting percentage of .357 for the match. Sophomore setter Dawn Jan (Belleville, N.J.) had 52 assists, and freshman outside hitter Joanna Foss (Northville, Mich.) totaled 12 kills and a team-high 12 digs.
The win snapped a six-match losing streak for the Red Foxes, who improved to 5-8. Manhattan, which received 17 kills and 10 digs from Sherryta Stokes, fell to 1-10.
Marist will return to action on Sunday, when the Red Foxes host Iona in a MAAC contest at 2 p.m.
