Gavin Leads Marist Past Saint Peter's

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Freshman guard Jay Gavin (Seat Pleasant, Md.) topped the 20-point plateau for the third game in a row, scoring 21 as the Marist men's basketball team cruised to an 86-71 triumph over Saint Peter's in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contest on Friday before 2,212 fans at the McCann Center. Gavin also had a career-high seven rebounds as the Red Foxes won their fourth straight.

Gavin shot 7-for-11 from the field, going 5-for-7 from three-point range. In his last three games, Gavin has averaged 21.7 points per game while draining 15 three-pointers.

Red-shirt senior guard Louie McCroskey (Bronx, N.Y.) added 12 points, five rebounds, a team-high four assists and a team-high two steals. Senior center Spongy Benjamin (St. Francis Village Erin, Trinidad) scored 13 points and hauled in five rebounds.

Marist scored a season-high 49 points in the first half as the Red Foxes (10-6 overall, 4-1 MAAC) jumped out to a 22-point halftime edge. Eleven different Marist players scored points, and seven scored at least six. Freshman forward Korey Bauer (Whitehall, Pa.) added a career-high nine off the bench on the strength of three three-pointers.

Marist shot .533 from the field and hit a season-best 11 three-pointers. The Red Foxes outrebounded the Peacocks, 44-36, and never trailed in the contest. Marist led by as much as 26 in the second half. Saint Peter's shot just .365 from the field.

Darrell Lampley led Saint Peter's (4-11, 1-4) with 15 points off the bench, and Todd Sowell scored 14. The Peacocks fell to 0-9 on the road as they fell for the ninth time in 10 games.

Marist returns to action on Sunday against Fairfield at 4 p.m. at the McCann Center. Prior to the game, red-shirt senior forward Ryan Stilphen (Bay Village, Ohio) will be honored for becoming the 25th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark in his career. Stilphen reached the milestone on Jan. 4 at Rider. The Marist Athletics Department will also recognize members of the local law enforcement and rescue units at the game.
