BALTIMORE, Md. - The Marist men's basketball team suffered an 83-71 loss to Loyola at Reitz Arena on Thursday, as the Red Foxes had their four-game winning streak come to an end. Freshman guard Jay Gavin (Seat Pleasant, Md.) led Marist (11-7 overall, 5-2 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) with 20 points, the fifth consecutive game he scored at least 20. Red-shirt senior forward Ryan Stilphen (Bay Village, Ohio) added 13 points and a team-best seven rebounds.
Senior center Spongy Benjamin (St. Francis Village Erin, Trinidad) gave Marist three double-digit scorers with 11 points on the strength of 5-for-6 shooting from the field. Red-shirt sophomore point guard David Devezin (Houston, Texas) had eight points and six assists against no turnovers.
After two free throws from Gavin tied the game at four apiece with 17:47 left in the first half, Loyola responded with a 15-0 run over the next 4:19 to take a 19-4 lead. Marist gradually cut into the lead, and a basket by Benjamin with 2:27 left in the first half gave the Red Foxes their first lead of the game, a 32-30 edge. After three more lead changes in the next two minutes, a basket by senior forward Shae McNamara (Milwaukee, Wis.) with 15 seconds left in the half enabled Marist to take a 36-35 lead into the locker room.
The Red Foxes had a game-high lead of four on two occasions in the second half. With 12:51 remaining, a jumper by senior swingman Ben Farmer (Clinton, Conn.) gave Marist a 50-47 lead. However, Loyola answered with a defining 13-0 run, and the Greyhounds never lost the lead after that. In that span, Marist went scoreless for 5:11.
Loyola led by as much as 15 with 2:27, but the Red Foxes made one final charge as red-shirt freshman guard Ryan Schneider (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) hit three-pointers in a span of 29 seconds to cut the Greyhounds' lead to 72-66 with 1:48 to go. However, Marist would draw no closer.
The Greyhounds (8-10, 4-3) were paced by senior Gerald Brown, who paced five Loyola scorers in double digits with a game-high 24. Brian Rudolph had 12 points, a team-high seven rebounds and tied for the team high with five assists. Loyola outrebounded Marist 42-27.
