Final Stats
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Marist volleyball team moved to 3-5 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play on Sunday after falling in four sets (26-24, 12-25, 26-28, 13-25) to Siena at UHY Court at the Alumni Recreation Center. After hitting .289 in their first set win, the Red Foxes only mustered a .092 hitting percentage for the rest of the match. Junior outside hitter Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) led Marist with 12 kills.
Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) and Kelsey Schaefer (Maria Stein, Ohio) each had nine kills. Freshman Cassie Campbell (Canton, Ohio) led all players with 21 digs. Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) added 14 digs.
The first set was a total back and forth affair with 16 ties and 10 lead changes. The Red Foxes had their largest lead of the set at 17-14 with a kill by Allie Burke (Alpharetta, Ga.). The Saints came back and ran off four straight points to take the lead, 18-17. Marist, then, retook the lead at 21-20 with a Schaefer kill only to see Siena tie the set at 21-21 with a Burgundy McCurty kill. With the set tied at 23-23, Siena took the lead on an April London kill. Facing set point, Foss recorded a kill to tie the set at 24-24. Back to back Schultze kills gave Marist the first set victory, 26-24.
After hitting only .190 in the first set, Siena's offense exploded in the second set. The Saints had seven kills in the first 16 points of the set, taking a 13-3 lead. Marist could not get within single-digits of Siena in the second set as the Saints recorded 18 kills and hit .357 to win the set 25-12. Marist was held to .061 with only seven kills.
With the match tied 1-1, the third set proved crucial. Marist started the match by taking three of the first four points. Siena responded with a 5-0 run aided by kills from McCurty, London, and Kelly Hummel to take a 6-3 lead. The Red Foxes came back and tied the set at 7-7 with a Campbell service ace. The third set was as close as the first with nine ties and five lead changes. Marist jumped out to its largest lead at 23-20 with a Schaefer kill. The Red Foxes had a set point opportunity at 24-23 only to see it go by the wayside due to a London kill. Siena had a set point at 25-24 but a Schultze kill tied the set at 25-25. With the set tied at 26-26, Siena took advantage of a Marist error and a kill by Amanda Begin to win the set 28-26 and go ahead 2-1 in the match.
Siena (8-9, 6-2 MAAC) took the momentum from a close third set win and used it to hold Marist to its lowest hitting percentage of the match in the fourth set. The Red Foxes hit only .053 in the fourth as Siena recorded a .297 hitting percentage. Siena never trailed in the fourth set and took it 25-13.
The Saints outhit Marist .226-.145 and also held an 88-75 advantage in digs. Marist outblocked Siena 6.0-4.0. Hummel led all players with 20 kills as McCurty added 18. Setter April London had a double-double with 47 assists and 11 kills. Kau'i Robello led Siena with 19 digs.
Marist (8-13, 3-5 MAAC) returns to action on Saturday, October 18 when Manhattan comes to the McCann Center. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
