POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's soccer team hosted the Saint Peter's Peacocks on Sunday evening. Despite a Krystian Witkowski (Rochester, N.Y.) goal in the 88th minute, the Red Foxes come back fell short. The final score of the match was 3-2 in the Peacocks favor.
After Witkowski's goal, Marist had a chance to tie the game in the final minute of play; however, a Matthew Boyd (Carle Place, N.Y.) shot sailed over the cross bar. The Red Foxes never got possession of the ball around the Peacocks net.
Sophomore Joe Touloumis (Cranford, N.J.) scored his first goal of the season in the 44th. The goal gave Marist momentum as the team headed into the locker room for halftime. Eric Chaves (North Arlington, N.J.) assisted on both of the Red Foxes' markers. Chaves now has three assists this season.
When the teams resumed play, the confidence displayed by Marist was evident as the squad had a number of chances in the opening minutes of the second half. The first of two missed opportunities came in 48th minute, when Chaves hit a header just wide of the left post.
About three minutes later, the Marist offense was developing an odd man rush in the Saint Peter's half of the field. After the ball was played to Touloumis on the right sideline, play was halted to administer a yellow card to a Peacocks player. The stoppage gave Saint Peter's the time they needed to recover from the potential Red Foxes chance.
Freshman goalkeeper Scott Kessler (Jericho, N.Y.) made seven saves in the loss. Some of his saves came at key times, to keep Marist in the match, and he did not allow Saint Peter's to extend their lead.
In the game, Marist had fewer fouls than Saint Peter's. Saint Peter's committed 25 infractions, to Marist's eight.
The Red Foxes will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 17 at 5 p.m. when Marist will travel to Baltimore, Md. to face the Loyola Greyhounds. Loyola is ranked 12th in the country and have a record of 9-0-1 this season and are 2-0 in conference
