POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's soccer team dropped an overtime decision to the Fairfield Stags on Friday night in Poughkeepsie. The Stags were ranked third in the northeast region when the match began. The final score was 1-0.
The difference maker came in the 93rd minute when Nicole Cavallaro scored off a cross from the left side. Marist goalkeeper Jamie Balzarini (Holbrook, N.Y.) deflected the cross, but it was not enough to get the ball away from Cavallaro. Balzarini made five saves in the loss. Her record dropped to 2-4 this season.
The Red Foxes played a solid match as they put four shots on goal. Registering shots on goal for Marist were sophomore Kassandra Palmer (Washington, N.J.), junior Kate Fox (Franklin, Mass.), Merrilynn Esteve (Morristown, N.J.) and Alexandra Lauterborn (Farmingdale, N.Y.).
In a cleanly played match with just 11 total fouls, Marist held the edge over the Stags, 8-3.
Marist will return to action on Sunday afternoon at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field when the Red Foxes host the Iona Gaels. The Gaels fell 4-0 on Friday afternoon at Siena. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
